Oil field exploration and development is a big part of Texas' Last Frontier. It's easy to see where the oil is flowing from, just follow the pumpjacks. Where there's a pumpjack, there's oil. These workhorses of the oil industry can be seen throughout Texas' Last Frontier. They come in many different shapes and sizes.

Prairie Fire

Prairie fires are a common phenomenon during periods of drought and during the dry season. The task of putting them out lies mainly with local volunteer fire departments. However, prairie fires do have a beneficial effect of burning off the dead vegetation and promoting new growth.

Wildlife

The southern high plains of West Texas is a harsh and unforgiving environment. Yet, a wide variety of wildlife actually thrives here. You'll find everything from snakes and lizards to muledeer and antelope.

Mississippi Kite

The Mississippi Kite is a small bird of prey in the family Accipitridae. It is 12 to 14 inches (30–36 cm) beak to tail and has a wingspan averaging 3 feet (91 cm). Mississippi Kites have narrow, pointed wings and are graceful in flight, often appearing to float in the air.

Barn Swallows

Barn swallows make a long migratory trip north from Central and South America every spring. They usually arrive on the southern high plains around the first week of April. Barn swallows mate and raise their young here during the summer months and then head back south around early September.

These images were taken of a full Lunar eclipse that took place on February 20, 2008. The location was Cochran County, Texas.
